Burial at Sea

A clear, respectful process for attended and unattended services in Atlantic waters off Long Island. Options include family-attended ceremonies, unattended scatterings, veteran honors, pet memorials and full-body burial consultation.

What happens at sea.

The vessel departs through Jones Beach Inlet and proceeds to the burial site at least three nautical miles offshore. Cremated remains are committed to the Atlantic Ocean, and families may include flowers, prayer, music or personal remarks.

A Circle of Remembrance may follow the committal as the captain circles the burial site and sounds the vessel’s horn. A certificate recording the date, time, latitude and longitude of the final resting place is provided after the service.

Weather and sea conditions always govern scheduling. Special requests can be discussed directly with Captain Clinton.

Unattended Scattering

Cremated remains are entrusted to Captain Clinton for burial at sea. South Shore Sea Burials conducts the service and handles the required burial-at-sea reporting. A certificate identifying the final resting place is provided afterward.

Attended Scattering

Family and guests travel aboard the vessel and may observe or participate in the ceremony. Music, flowers and personal readings can be incorporated. The basic fee covers up to six passengers; larger vessels are available for groups of 7 to 100 passengers.

Military & Veteran Honors

Family-attended veteran services may incorporate military funeral honors when arranged with the appropriate service branch. Our dedicated Veterans page also explains VA burial allowances and the separate Navy and Coast Guard burial-at-sea programs.

Pet Memorials

Pet cremains may be scattered in an unattended service that includes a certificate mailed to the family. Families who prefer to attend may use the attended service; the attended fees above apply.

Unattended scattering: $195 basic fee. Attended scattering: $395 basic fee for up to six passengers. Pet memorial, unattended: $75 basic fee.

Larger groups of 7 to 100 passengers are priced according to vessel and group size. Full-body burial at sea requires separate arrangements. Special requests and transportation or pickup services may involve additional fees. Call 516-369-0032 for availability and details.
